Braathe Enterprises music intern Nell Duesler interviews Robert Braathe about his favorite band, Magdalena Bay. Here are the highlights:

Nell: “I want to hear about how you first came across Magdalena Bay.”

Robert: “I was at a Phantogram concert, and I had some time to kill before the show, and I looked at the coming attractions and I took a picture. And then after the show, I downloaded Image, and much like one of their lyrics in that song, I was like 'Oh, my God.' And I just listened to a bunch of their stuff, and I'm like, 'I got to find out more about this band.'”

Nell: “When Imaginal Disc came out, what was your first reaction?”

Robert: “I think it had been out for a couple months, but what I did was I kind of went online and my first thing I like to do is what music videos are out there and what's the live reaction like? So I found Image from the Jimmy Kimmel show and I also saw Killing Time which has become one of my favorite live performances. And, just the imagery, both musically and visually, just blew my mind.”

Nell: “Do you feel like your own music has been influenced because of maybe their style or their creativity?”

Robert: “I found anytime I really fall in love professionally with an artist, I tend to start writing something that reflects their style. Like a couple years ago, Louisa, who I've written with, Louisa Fisher, I was like, 'Hey, I really love Dua Lipa. I've got something that I'd like to write for her.' I'm not going to be one of those people who thinks it's actually going to get to her, but she listened to Dua Lipa, kind of performed it in that style. Similarly, a couple of the things I've written of late have kind of had that kind of spiritual, just not strangeness, but uniqueness to it. And I think a lot of times when there's an artist I really like, it kind of adds another layer to the lyrics that I've been writing.”
